As a full-time Medical Director, Dr. Wanes Barsemian enjoys being able to control his clinical time while also focusing on the big picture. He enjoys seeking opportunities for improvement in the flow of patients and different processes in the hospital. Dr. Barsemian says his most significant accomplishment at Benchmark Hospitalist has been his role in the Utilization Management improvement at Adventist health Glendale. He has been working to improve documentation, increase case mix index, and effectively reduce the length of stay from the highest in Adventist Health System of 20 hospitals to the lowest.
A typical day for Dr. Barsemian starts by checking the list of the overnight admissions, prioritizing what floor to visit, and checking and auditing patients' status. His advice for new doctors is to communicate well with patients, families, collogues, and consultants. "Most of us believe we over-communicate when in fact we under-communicate," he says.
Off the job, Dr. Barsemian stays grounded by connecting to his family of three children and focusing on meditation. He also enjoys staying active with yoga, hiking, and running. "The American author Anne Lamott says, 'Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.'"
